Research by BIA/Kelsey group shows that in the USA (followed closely by the UK) a staggering 97% of all consumers use digital media to shop locally. Now this doesn't mean that all these consumers are buying online but it means that they are searching for businesses and services online first, comparing prices and looking for discounts before they make their purchase. Customers are typically typing in a service followed by their location, such as 'plumber Kent'; this will provide more specific results for the user and will be a better qualified customer for the business.

As a result Google has introduced their own business directory Google Places (which enables businesses to get their own location shown on a Google map plus a description of their business and service with a link to their website). Facebook has also taken this onboard and created a feature for local businesses to use: Facebook Pages. This is a Facebook page for businesses where they can describe their activities and information whilst enabling them to interact with their customers.

Cost per action (CPA Marketing)

This is a hot strategy for making money online and it's popularity continues to grow. Most people have heard of affiliate marketing where you receive a commission when you sell someone else's product or service. CPA is similar to affiliate marketing, however instead of being paid once a customer purchases and pays for an item you get paid when a potential customer performs a certain action. This 'action' varies from entering in an email address, signing up to a website or signing up to a free trial of an item. The payout offers vary on the action required.

A CPA network acts as the middle man by brining together advertisers and people who want to promote the products and services, making sure that you get paid! CPA networks will list all of the items a certain company is promoting and the associated terms etc. This strategy allows you to actually start making money and generating income without actually selling anything.

Video Marketing

90% of all internet traffic is going to be video related by 2013* (*CISCO). Using video to promote your business, products and services is an essential strategy for making money online and you need to know about it.

The likelihood is that you answered yes to one of the above and more than likely you watch more video online now than you did previously. Online video usage is increasing at an exponential rate and is set to continue to grow. It’s the future and this is why it is an essential strategy.

YouTube states that over 2 billion YouTube videos are watched every single day. In 2010 alone, over 13,000,000 hours of footage was uploaded and YouTube is not just popular in the US (the general public perception), in fact 70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US and is localized in 25 countries around the world and across 43 different languages.
